About Us

Our Mission

HeartSounds’ mission is to provide non-invasive medical devices for a wide range of diagnostic and telemetric applications utilizing the PATCH™ technology.  The company’s current applications focus on fetal heart rate monitoring and cardiovascular diagnostics.

The Founders

Amir L. Bastawrous, MD

Amir is a practicing surgeon with 19 years experience in the medical field. He is currently an MBA candidate at the Liautaud Graduate School of Business at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Amir is a co-founder of HeartSounds. He utilizes his expertise and medical training to formulate the market strategy and product development. His network of physician contacts facilitates the definition of the problems and opportunities. Amir is currently HeartSounds' Chief Medical Officer.

 

Michael D. McCoy

Michael is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of HeartSounds. He is currently an MBA candidate at the Liautaud Graduate School of Business at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Michael received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in 2001, concentrating in digital circuitry and semiconductor technologies. He has

five years of experience in R&D at Abbott Laboratories, where he developed custom, automated laboratory equipment and bioinformatics systems. Michael is a Liautaud GSB Scholar and utilizes his expertise and experience to lead the company’s marketing and operations efforts.

 

Matthew W. Norris

Matthew is a co-founder of HeartSounds and currently acts as the company’s COE. He received his B.S. in Mathematical Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he studied computer-based algorithms. Matthew has worked as a Business Systems Analyst for over 10 years and he also possesses operational experience in both the direct to consumer and business-to-business sectors.  He also owns and operates Norware Information Services, an IT consulting firm.  Matthew is currently an MBA candidate with concentrations in Finance and Entrepreneurship at the Liautaud Graduate School of Business, where he is also a Liautaud Scholar.

 

Roland Priemer, PhD

Roland is an Associate Professor for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he invented the HeartSounds technology.  Roland (PhD, EE, Illinois Institute of Technology ’69) has over 30 years of experience in the field of computer engineering.  His research interests include optimal and adaptive digital signal processing, fuzzy logic, neural networks, and microprocessor-based applications.
